Ottoman Relics

Half day,  (afternoon)

We are pleased to offer you another walking tour where you will see the old Constinopel`s two irresistible historical buildings, the " small Haghia Sophia", a former Orthodox church and the mosque prior to the collosale homologous and the Topkapi Palace, as residence the power symbol of the sultans of the Ottoman Empire.

The Little Hagia Sophia is located in Eminönü, in the Kumkapi neighborhood, near the Sea of Marmara, the Hippodrome and the ruins of the Grand Palace. Currently it is separated by a railway between Sirkeci-Halkali and the coastal road. Little Hagia Sophia was a former ortodoxe church dedicated to Saints Sergius and Bacchus of  Constantinople between 531 and 536 AD, shortly before the construction of Hagia Sophia.

It was created by the Emperor Justinian, and later converted into a mosque during the Ottoman Empire. This building is considered the most important pieces of the Byzantine Empire and also the architecture of Istanbul. The building has a central dome and the external structure that is very similar to the Great Hagia Sophia, so some architects argue that both are made by the same architects, Isidore of Miletus and Anthmius of Tralles. However, there is also recently claimed that the Little Hagia Sophia a sort of trial version has been the main church of the Byzantine Empire and the largest in the world.

Topkapi Palace: the best reflection of the imperial era in  Istanbul and a symbol of the power reached by the  Ottoman capital Constantinople. From this palace the Sultans ruled their empire until the mid-nineteenth century. The construction of the Topkapi Palace began shortly after Mehmed II, "The Conqueror" took  Constantinople. The original building was opened in 1465. During the following decades, the palace was extended by its different rulers. In 1856, Sultan Abdulmecid decided to move his residence to  Dolmabahçe Palace, more modern and western styled.
