Byzantine Remains
Half day walking tour (in the morning)
We are pleased to offer you this
tour by foot, a walk where you can admire the most beautiful and important sites of
ancient Constantinople, capital of two empires and for centuries one of the world's major cities. Here you will see incredible places like
Hagia Sophia, the glory of
Byzantine architecture, the
Blue Mosque, famous for its six minarets and tiles,
Byzantine Hippodrome and the
Grand Bazaar, the largest covered market in the world, with more than 4400 stores.
Hippodrome: This square in front of the Blue Mosque covers the old site of what was a
Roman Hippodrome, where you can see the
German Fountain, the
Obelisk of Theodosius, the
Serpentine Column and the
Column of Constantine. The
Hippodrome was one of the most famous sites of Byzantine Constantinople, later used as a resting place for the Ottoman troops, who called it "
At Meydani", horse square.
Blue Mosque: This is one of the most emblematic buildings of Istanbul, with its dome and semi-cascading domes and six elegant and stylish minarets, accentuating the angles. It is called the
Sultanahmet Mosque by the Turks, it has been named
Blue Mosque for tourists, due to its interior walls, covered with beautiful blue tiles from Iznik.
Hagia Sophia: This was a
Byzantine Orthodox patriarchal basilica during nine centuries and mosque for another five,
Hagia Sophia is one of the most extraordinary works of universal architecture. For the past 70 years it has been a museum open to the public that, under his dome, over 55 meters high, one of the highest in the world, welcomes thousands of visitors each day.
Grand Bazaar: The bazaar was established in the Ottoman period by Sultan Mehmet II "the Conqueror" and is small city in itself. In 1880 a census revealed that the bazaar had 4399 stores, 2195 workshops, 497 looms, 12 depots, 18 fountains, 12 small mosques, a large mosque, a primary school and a tomb. Today the number of establishments has not changed much, but new restaurants, cafes, banks and an information center has been added. The
Grand Bazaar is an
unavoidable visit in Istanbul and you can buy products of all kinds.
